Providing support for a positive birth experience.

I believe that every woman’s birth experience is an event that is stamped within her heart and mind for as long as she lives.  This birth “stamp” can be primarily positive or negative.  It is my desire as a doula to assist the expectant couple in achieving a positive “stamp” for their child birth experience.  ~ Sherri Peeler

What a Doula Does:

~ A doula understands the physiology of birth and the emotional needs a woman in labor may have.

~ A doula assists the woman in preparing for and carrying out her plans for labor delivery.

~ A doula stays with the woman throughout her labor and delivery.

~ A doula provides emotional support, physical comfort measures and an objective viewpoint.

What a Doula Does NOT Do:

~ A doula does not perform clinical tasks such as blood pressure checks, fetal heart rate checks, vaginal exams , etc…  I am there to provide physical comfort and emotional support only!

~ A doula does not make decisions for you.  I will help you get the information necessary to make an informed decisionI will also be there to remind you if there is a departure from your Birth Plan.

~ A doula does not speak to staff on your behalf regarding your health care decisions being made.  I will discuss your concerns with you and suggest options, but you or your partner will speak directly with your health care providers.

  1. After hearing what a positive experience one of my good friends had with Sherri, I approached my husband about utilizing her when we found out we were pregnant with baby #2!
Our first birth experience was not a completely positive one, not so much with the OB, but with the hospital and it’s staff. I worried that I would have another birth experience that would be surrounded with negative memories. Sherri immediately made both my husband and I feel at ease with developing a birth plan and educating us to different options we had before, during and after the birth.
I couldn’t be any more pleased with the experience we had with the birth of our son. Sherri helped me through my labor and delivery the way I wanted it to be, supporting me while my husband tried to get to the hospital (he works away) the fastest and safest he could. Sherri was the calm voice that helped me to understand what was happening and what was needed in order for me to do what I needed to do. This is what made my experience so good. Not just that, but my recovery as well as Sherri visited after I returned home and supported me in my transition of having 2 children and breast feeding (which btw is NOT my favorite thing, but I’m doing it!) I would recommend Sherri to any parent(s) and cannot thank her enough for the support she provided to my family and I!

  2. My husband and I are first time parents. When I became pregnant I didn’t know what a doula was and I wasn’t convinced that a doula could offer anything more than I was already getting from my doctors, especially during delivery. I also was concerned that a doula would take the place of my husband during delivery.

My whole perspective changed after we attended Sherri’s Childbirth Education Course. Sherri led us down the entire baby development and delivery process. I couldn’t believe how little I understood about my own body and delivery. Sherri “slapped some knowledge on us” in an interactive way that doctors usually don’t take time (or have time) to do.

I also learned that doulas are support for both the mother and father during delivery. They don’t take the place of the husband, they show the husband what to do and step back. This was a huge comfort for my husband because (like me) he had no idea how to help me get through labor. This was the biggest contributing factor for our decision to hire Sherri.

After every doctor visit I would call Sherri and she would explain to me what they were talking about. She showed my husband and I exercises to help open up the hips and constantly fed us good information on natural supplements to support healthy pregnancy, labor, and lactation.

When the time came for labor she was there for us. Taking us through exercises to ensure that my labor kept progressing, cooking dinner for us while I did ball circles, making sure I stayed hydrated, explaining to us how I was progressing through the stages of labor, timing my contractions, the list goes on and on.

When I was in the hospital I don’t know what we would have done without her. It was such a comfort to me for her to explain what was going on. She kept me relaxed and calm during labor.

Through it all she was supportive, unbiased, professional, informative, and very kind. I would recommend to all parents (especially new ones) to put her on your team. I know you won’t regret it!
